Fog District

Whitechapel, 1888, a lamp and a handful of clues. Half your atmosphere is handed over before the game has done anything. Lighting the lamps as your progress mechanic fits nicely too, since staying safe and getting the job done become one and the same act. Get the sound right and most of a horror game is accounted for.

A jump scare version of the genre is how the maker puts it. Fair warning, and a ceiling, both in the same breath. Scares running on timing rather than dread go stale fast, and a period setting won't carry that on its own. Still: it is short, it commits, and the length matches what it's doing. So yes, play it. Just turn up expecting a fairground attraction rather than a slow burn.

I play horror with the volume most of the way down, so weigh this accordingly. A lamplighter's round through the fog is a lovely quiet job to be handed, and Whitechapel in 1888 does most of the atmosphere before anything happens. Short, tense, honest
