Offline progression is the pitch. It's also the problem. If my character gets stronger without me there, my entire contribution is a visit to a menu. The economy is the interesting bit, and an economy needs a population before it means anything. Fine as a tab you forget you left open. I wouldn't call it playing.

Text MMOs never actually died. They went quiet for a while, that's all, and this is the real article. Numbers climbing, rare drops you'll want, a player economy that does real work, and it keeps ticking away while you're off elsewhere. That last bit is the line between a game that respects your time and one that farms it.

I'm sympathetic to the pitch. No paywall, it keeps ticking while you're gone, look in whenever you feel like it. The trouble is that looking in is currently the whole game. Numbers had gone up while I was away, I clicked abit, numbers went up again... A player-driven economy needs the players first.
