open case

No engine, no art, just documents and a form to fill in. That's the honest version of this genre. Its strength is the commit step: you send the report and you take the verdict, and plenty of far bigger mystery games never ask that much of you. It's small and it knows it's small. I'd take a short case that resolves.

Reading evidence and hunting contradictions is a different pleasure altogether to being told a story, because nothing confirms you're right until you commit. A six answer casebook gives that a real shape. Something to fill in, and then a moment where either you're wrong or you aren't. Documents can do this better than most 3D worlds manage.

Reading is the whole verb here, and that isn't a complaint. You sit with the statements, you find the place where two of them can't both be true, and you fill in the casebook at whatever pace suits. Nothing ticking. Nothing to react to. Quick if you're confident, a good deal longer if you want to be sure before you send the report. Lovely with a cup of something.
